The Ohio Turnpike accepts E-ZPass (33% discount), cash, credit/debit cards, and Toll By Plate (license plate billing at cash rate).

Ohio Turnpike Payment Methods

The Ohio Turnpike offers four ways to pay your toll, each with different rates, convenience levels, and lane requirements. E-ZPass electronic tolling provides a 33% discount and lets you drive through at highway speed without stopping. Cash and credit cards are accepted at staffed toll lanes at the standard rate. Toll By Plate is the automatic fallback for drivers who pass through without making a payment, resulting in a mailed invoice. This guide explains exactly how each method works, what to expect at toll plazas, and how to avoid common problems like violations and lost tickets.

E-ZPass Electronic Tolling

E-ZPass is by far the best payment method on the Ohio Turnpike, offering a 33% discount on every trip and the convenience of driving through toll plazas at highway speed without stopping. Your E-ZPass transponder communicates with overhead antennas as you pass through designated E-ZPass lanes. The toll is automatically calculated based on your entry and exit points and deducted from your prepaid E-ZPass account balance.

E-ZPass lanes are clearly marked with purple signage and are available at all toll plazas on the Ohio Turnpike. Most modern toll plazas have open-road tolling where E-ZPass vehicles can pass through at the posted speed limit without slowing down. At older plazas with toll booths, dedicated E-ZPass lanes allow passage at reduced speed (typically 15 mph). Always look for the purple E-ZPass signs to identify the correct lanes.

Any E-ZPass transponder from any member state works on the Ohio Turnpike at the full discount rate. You do not need an Ohio-specific transponder. If you do not have E-ZPass, you can sign up online at ohioezpass.com. For complete details, see our E-ZPass guide.

Cash Payment

Cash is the traditional payment method on the Ohio Turnpike and is still widely accepted at staffed toll lanes. When you enter the turnpike, you pull into a staffed or automated lane and take a ticket from the machine. This ticket records your entry point. When you exit, you hand the ticket to the toll booth attendant, who calculates your toll based on the distance traveled and your vehicle class. You then pay in cash and receive change if needed.

The cash toll rate is higher than the E-ZPass rate. For Class 1 vehicles, the cash rate is $0.106 per mile compared to $0.073 per mile with E-ZPass, a difference of about 33%. On a full westbound trip, that means paying $27.75 cash versus $19.00 with E-ZPass, a difference of $8.75. For occasional one-time trips, the difference may not justify the effort of setting up E-ZPass. But for anyone who uses the turnpike more than a few times per year, the savings from E-ZPass add up quickly.

Important: Do not lose your entry ticket. If you cannot produce a ticket at the exit, you may be charged the maximum toll for the entire turnpike route in your vehicle class. Keep the ticket in a safe, easily accessible location in your vehicle. Some drivers tape it to the dashboard or place it in their sun visor.

Credit and Debit Card Payment

Credit and debit cards are accepted at staffed toll lanes on the Ohio Turnpike. The toll rate is the same as the cash rate, so there is no additional surcharge for card payment, but you also do not receive the E-ZPass discount. Both chip-insert and contactless (tap) payments are generally accepted at staffed lanes. The process is similar to cash: take a ticket on entry, present it at the exit, and pay with your card instead of cash.

Note that credit and debit cards cannot be used in the automated E-ZPass lanes. If you do not have E-ZPass and want to pay by card, you must use a staffed toll lane. During peak travel periods (holidays, summer weekends), staffed lanes may have longer wait times. This is one more reason to consider E-ZPass, which allows you to bypass staffed lanes entirely and drive through at speed.

Toll By Plate

Toll By Plate is the Ohio Turnpike's automatic license plate billing system. It is not a payment method you choose but rather a fallback that activates automatically when no other payment is collected. If you drive through an E-ZPass lane without a valid transponder, or if you pass through a toll plaza without stopping at a staffed lane, overhead cameras photograph your front and rear license plates.

The Ohio Turnpike uses the plate images to look up the registered vehicle owner through the relevant state's vehicle registration database. An invoice is then mailed to the address on file. The toll charged is the standard cash rate, not the discounted E-ZPass rate. You typically receive the invoice within 2 to 4 weeks and have approximately 30 days to pay.

What happens if you do not pay: If the Toll By Plate invoice goes unpaid past the deadline, administrative fees are added to the balance. These fees can significantly increase the total amount owed. For Ohio-registered vehicles, continued non-payment can result in a hold on your vehicle registration renewal. For out-of-state vehicles, the debt may be referred to a collections agency. To avoid Toll By Plate entirely, either use E-ZPass or make sure to stop at a staffed toll lane to pay with cash or card.

If you believe you received a Toll By Plate invoice in error (for example, if you had a valid E-ZPass that failed to read), you can dispute the charge by contacting the Ohio Turnpike customer service center. Have your E-ZPass account number and the invoice number ready when you call.

What to Expect at Toll Plazas

Ohio Turnpike toll plazas are located at each interchange where you enter or exit the turnpike. As you approach a toll plaza, you will see overhead signs indicating which lanes are available for each payment type. E-ZPass lanes are marked with purple signs. Cash and credit lanes are marked with green signs indicating staffed lanes. The speed limit drops to 10 mph as you enter the plaza area - this is strictly enforced for safety.

At entry plazas, you either drive through the E-ZPass lane (where your transponder is read automatically) or take a ticket from the automated machine in the staffed lane. At exit plazas, E-ZPass users drive through and are charged automatically, while cash and card users stop at a staffed lane to pay.

During peak travel times - particularly Friday and Sunday afternoons, holiday weekends, and summer vacation periods - toll plazas can experience moderate congestion. E-ZPass lanes typically have minimal delay even during peak times, which is another advantage of electronic tolling. If you are paying cash during a peak period, allow a few extra minutes for the queue at staffed lanes.

Violations and Penalties

Toll violations on the Ohio Turnpike are taken seriously and can result in escalating penalties. The most common violation is driving through without paying, which triggers Toll By Plate billing. If you fail to pay the Toll By Plate invoice, the following consequences may apply:

  • Late fees: Administrative fees are added to unpaid invoices after the payment deadline (typically 30 days).
  • Registration hold (Ohio vehicles): The Ohio Turnpike can place a hold on your Ohio vehicle registration, preventing renewal until the toll and fees are paid.
  • Collections (out-of-state vehicles): Unpaid tolls for out-of-state vehicles may be referred to a third-party collections agency, which can impact your credit report.
  • Repeat offenders: Drivers with a pattern of unpaid tolls may face additional legal action.

To dispute a toll charge, contact the Ohio Turnpike customer service center at the phone number listed on your invoice. Common grounds for dispute include E-ZPass transponder malfunction, incorrect vehicle classification, or a license plate that was misread by the cameras. Keep your E-ZPass account number and any supporting documentation available when you call.

Payment FAQ

What payment methods are accepted on the Ohio Turnpike?+
The Ohio Turnpike accepts four payment methods: E-ZPass electronic tolling (33% discount), cash at staffed toll booths, credit or debit cards at staffed toll booths (same rate as cash), and Toll By Plate which automatically photographs your license plate and mails an invoice at the cash rate. E-ZPass provides the best rate and the fastest passage through toll plazas. Cash and credit card require stopping at a staffed lane. Toll By Plate is an automatic fallback if you use an E-ZPass lane without a valid transponder.
What happens if I drive through a toll without paying on the Ohio Turnpike?+
If you drive through an E-ZPass lane without a valid transponder, overhead cameras will photograph your license plate and you will receive a Toll By Plate invoice mailed to the registered vehicle owner. The charge is the cash rate, not the discounted E-ZPass rate. If you fail to pay the Toll By Plate invoice within the specified timeframe, administrative fees are added. Continued non-payment can result in a hold on your Ohio vehicle registration or, for out-of-state vehicles, referral to a collections agency.
Can I pay with a credit card on the Ohio Turnpike?+
Yes, credit and debit cards are accepted at staffed toll lanes on the Ohio Turnpike. The toll rate is the same as the cash rate, so there is no additional surcharge for using a card, but you also do not receive the E-ZPass discount. Both chip and contactless payments are generally accepted. You cannot use a credit card in the E-ZPass automatic lanes. If all you have is a card and no E-ZPass, use a staffed toll lane.
How does Toll By Plate work on the Ohio Turnpike?+
Toll By Plate is an automatic license plate billing system. When you drive through an E-ZPass lane without a valid transponder, or when no toll payment is collected at a staffed lane, overhead cameras photograph your front and rear license plates. The Ohio Turnpike then looks up the registered vehicle owner and mails an invoice to the address on file with the vehicle registration agency. The toll is charged at the cash rate. You typically have 30 days to pay the invoice before additional fees are applied.
Do I still take a ticket when entering the Ohio Turnpike?+
If you are paying with cash or credit card, yes, you take a ticket from the automated ticket machine when you enter the turnpike. You then present this ticket when you exit, and your toll is calculated based on the distance between your entry and exit points. If you lose your ticket, you may be charged the maximum toll for the full route. E-ZPass users do not take a ticket as their transponder is read electronically at both entry and exit points. Toll By Plate users also do not take a ticket as the cameras record their plate at each point.
