Toll Costs & Rates

How much does it cost to drive the entire Ohio Turnpike?+
The full westbound trip (PA border to IN border, 241 miles) costs $19.00 with E-ZPass or $27.75 cash for a Class 1 passenger vehicle in 2026. Eastbound is slightly less at $16.00 E-ZPass or $23.50 cash. The difference is due to toll collection point positioning. Commercial vehicles pay more based on their class. See our rates page for all 7 vehicle classes.
How much is the toll for a passenger car with E-ZPass?+
The E-ZPass rate for Class 1 passenger vehicles is $0.073 per mile in 2026. A full westbound trip costs $19.00 E-ZPass. The exact toll depends on your entry and exit interchanges, as the Ohio Turnpike uses distance-based pricing. Use our toll calculator to find your exact cost.
Do eastbound and westbound tolls differ?+
Yes, eastbound and westbound tolls differ slightly for the same pair of interchanges. This is because toll collection points are positioned differently in each direction, resulting in small differences in the calculated distance. For a full-route Class 1 trip, westbound is $19.00 E-ZPass while eastbound is $16.00. Our calculator accounts for this difference automatically.
How often do Ohio Turnpike toll rates increase?+
Ohio Turnpike toll rates are adjusted annually, with increases taking effect on 1 January each year. The 2026 increase was 2.7%, consistent with the multi-year rate adjustment schedule approved by the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission. The increases fund road maintenance, infrastructure improvements, and debt service.
Is there a minimum toll amount?+
Yes, there is a minimum toll for very short trips. For Class 1 vehicles, the minimum is approximately $1.50 with E-ZPass and $2.00 with cash. Even if the distance-based calculation would produce a lower amount, you will be charged at least the minimum.
How are tolls calculated - per mile or flat fee?+
Ohio Turnpike tolls are calculated per mile. You take a ticket (or have your E-ZPass read) when you enter and pay based on the distance between your entry and exit interchanges when you leave. This means you only pay for the portion of the turnpike you use. The per-mile rate for Class 1 vehicles is $0.073 with E-ZPass or $0.106 with cash.
Are there toll-free stretches of the Ohio Turnpike?+
No, the entire 241-mile Ohio Turnpike is tolled. There are no free segments. However, service plazas are accessible without passing through toll plazas, so stopping at a plaza does not cost extra. If you want toll-free travel, US-20 runs parallel to the turnpike as a free alternative.
When did the last toll increase take effect?+
The most recent toll increase took effect on 1 January 2026, raising rates by approximately 2.7%. The previous increase was on 1 January 2025. The next scheduled increase will take effect on 1 January 2027.

E-ZPass

Does E-ZPass work on the Ohio Turnpike?+
Yes, E-ZPass is the primary electronic toll payment system on the Ohio Turnpike and provides a 33% discount compared to cash rates. E-ZPass transponders from all 19+ member states work on the Ohio Turnpike at the full discount rate.
Does my out-of-state E-ZPass work in Ohio?+
Yes, E-ZPass transponders from all member states work on the Ohio Turnpike at the full E-ZPass discount rate. This includes transponders from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, and all other member states. You do not need an Ohio-specific transponder.
How much does E-ZPass save on the Ohio Turnpike?+
E-ZPass saves approximately 33% compared to cash rates for all vehicle classes. For Class 1 passenger vehicles, the rate drops from $0.106/mi cash to $0.073/mi E-ZPass. On a full westbound trip, that is $8.75 saved ($27.75 cash vs $19.00 E-ZPass).
Where can I buy an E-ZPass transponder?+
Ohio E-ZPass transponders are obtained by signing up online at ohioezpass.com. The transponder is mailed to you within 5-7 business days. You cannot buy them at retail stores in Ohio, though some other E-ZPass states sell transponders at retail locations. Any E-ZPass transponder from any state works on the Ohio Turnpike.
Is there a monthly fee for E-ZPass Ohio?+
Yes, Ohio E-ZPass charges a $0.75 monthly maintenance fee. However, this fee is waived if you make 30 or more single trips on the Ohio Turnpike per month. For commuters, this means the fee is effectively free if you use the turnpike at least 4 days per week for round trips.
Can I share my E-ZPass between vehicles?+
No, each E-ZPass transponder is assigned to a specific vehicle. You can have multiple transponders on a single account for multiple vehicles, but each transponder should stay in its assigned vehicle. Using a transponder in the wrong vehicle can result in violations.

Payment & Violations

What payment methods are accepted?+
The Ohio Turnpike accepts E-ZPass (33% discount), cash at staffed lanes, credit/debit cards at staffed lanes (same rate as cash), and Toll By Plate (automatic license plate billing at cash rate). E-ZPass provides the best rate and fastest passage.
What happens if I drive through without paying?+
If you pass through an E-ZPass lane without a valid transponder, cameras photograph your license plate and you receive a Toll By Plate invoice at the cash rate. Unpaid invoices incur late fees. For Ohio vehicles, continued non-payment can result in a registration hold. Out-of-state violations may be sent to collections.
How does Toll By Plate work?+
Toll By Plate uses overhead cameras to photograph your license plate. The registered vehicle owner is looked up through the state motor vehicle database and an invoice is mailed. The toll is charged at the cash rate. You typically have 30 days to pay before additional fees apply.
Can I pay with a credit card?+
Yes, credit and debit cards (chip and contactless) are accepted at staffed toll lanes. The rate is the same as cash. You cannot use cards in the automated E-ZPass lanes.
How do I dispute a toll charge?+
Contact the Ohio Turnpike customer service center with your invoice number and any supporting documentation (such as your E-ZPass account number if you believe your transponder should have been read). Disputes are typically resolved within a few weeks.

Driving & Route

Is the Ohio Turnpike the same as I-80?+

Are there rest stops on the Ohio Turnpike?+

What cities does the Ohio Turnpike pass through?+
The turnpike crosses northern Ohio providing access to Youngstown, Warren, Akron, Cleveland (southern suburbs), Medina, Mansfield, Sandusky/Cedar Point, Fremont, and Toledo. It connects the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the Indiana Toll Road.
Are there toll roads in Ohio besides the Turnpike?+
